The Maha Mantra

Hare Krishna Maha Mantra

A sacred invocation cherished in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition.

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

A devotional invocation

The Maha Mantra is a prayerful calling upon the divine names. In the Gaudiya Vaishnava understanding, chanting is approached as a practice of devotion, service and remembrance—not merely as a numerical exercise.

Approaching the mantra

  • Chant with attention and hear each name as clearly as possible.
  • Return gently to the mantra when the mind wanders.
  • Approach the practice with humility and a willingness to serve.
  • Follow the guidance of bona fide spiritual teachers in your tradition.

Meaning and interpretation

Traditional explanations understand the mantra as an appeal to the Lord and His divine energy for engagement in devotional service. The names Hare, Krishna and Rama have rich meanings within Vaishnava theology.
